 * There is a difference between source [7] ("Descendants of Robert Hoge") which says Thomas Hoge was born in "Franklin", & source [10] (History of Venango Co. PA)  which places the birth in "Butler County".  It is possible that source [7] refers to Frankin Co. PA  in the Tuscarora Valley, where it borders Juniata Co.  Thomas Hoge's grandparents Robert & Letitia Hoge settled there, and Thomas' father James Hoge was born in Juniata Co.   It is also possible there is confusion around Franklin Twp., Butler Co. PA (Thomas' parents moved in 1798 to Center Twp., Butler Co., part of which later became Franklin Twp. - though not the part they lived in).  The most likely explanation is that the author of source [7] placed Thomas' birth in the city of Franklin, Venango Co. PA, where Thomas located in 1833, where his work as an adult was located with the Venango National Bank, and from which place he was a state congressman.

Kinnear was president and ''Thomas Hoge'' vice president. Culver was business & financial manager who carried out large enterprises with large returns on capital invested. "Culver was the financial lion of the oil region".  Early in 1866 rumors circulated against feasibility of some of his projects, & against the financial credit of the banking house of Culver, Penn & Co. of NY., head of Culver's family of banks. These rumors occasioned a run on that bank; it failed 27 Mar 1866. The banks at Franklin, Oil City, Petroleum Center, Titusville & Meadville also failed. Creditors, stockholders, depositors lost heavily.   <br>Some creditors were in favor of allowing Culver to work out his debts, but Thomas Hoge was not among them. Per articles in the Titusville press, Culver was imprisoned in Franklin for several months, until the U. S. Congress reconvened and issued his release. The financial community was divided &  resentment remained toward Culvers prosecutors.
