Caton and they lived in Charlotte, NC. Their first son was named  Sylvester, named for the family's first CSA casualty Sylvester Caton (d. 1864) per family tradition.  Carrie was a Caton in-law,  unless she married a cousin.

+*The field stone marked grave could belong to Lois Ann Thomas. Or it could belong to Thomas L. Caton, husband of Carrie S. Caton. The flag beside the stone would suggest a veteran. The news article about the cemetery suggests family in the area still knowledgeable about the cemetery, so perhaps the flag-planter knows whose stone this is.
-It has been speculated that Carrie S., "dau. of E. S. Caton" could be the daughter of Elijah, but he died in 1865 and she reported her birth year (1900 census) as 1868.   She apparently married a cousin, Thomas L. Caton, and named their first son Sylvester.  As Thomas L.'s birth year is listed as 1866, making him a bit younger than Carrie, a possibility remains that if the census taker reversed their birth years, she may then have been born in 1866 as her gravestone says.  In that case, is remains possible that she could have been daughter of Elijah Caton. His name is not seen as E. C. Caton on his stone, or in the census.
