''John McNiven Leckie'' is not in my direct ancestry. He is related the following way:
* Great-great-grandfather of [[David John Leckie]], husband of my sister [[Jennifer Katherine Williams]] Leckie

John Leckie (1842-1896) apparently lived his 54 years in Scotland, most likely in the Lowlands area north of Glasgow; his last child was born in Sterlingshire. He has a sister Janet who lived on a farm in Inverkip (Renfrewshire, W of Larnakshire and SW of Stirlingshire), who raised John's children after both his wives died. The first wife, name not now known, died in childbirth, either at the birth of Henry Leckie who lived to age 12, or at the birth of a subsequent child that did not survive. The second wife, Jane McNiven of Abbey-Landward, bore four children then died at age 33. The death dates are unknown for either wife. Our Leckie line descends from the fourth child of John Leckie and Jane McNiven, son [[John McNiven Leckie]].

Leckie, b. 1878, spouse John W.N.; John McN Leckie, b. 1899; and Mary M. Leckie, b. 1900. All live in Lanarkshire. Note: These names and dates match well with family records with the exception of the W. abbreviation. (It is possible that the mark transcribed as "W.N." in Ancestry.com's index could have been intended as "McN"; we've not viewed the original census image).
