The Dittman surname is seen recorded as Detman, Dedman, Deadman, and Debtman; when spelled "Dittman it is still pronounced as "Detman" by some families.
* In 1773 the ship "Crawford" crossed from Rotterdam, via Cowes, to Philadelphia. Ninety men took the oath of allegiance, including ''Johann Heinrich Dittman''.
* In 1783,''Henry Deadman'' is recorded on tax lists of Mt. Pleasant Twp., Bedford Co. PA (present day Mt. Pleasant Twp., Westmoreland Co. PA), as a free man (unmarried) owning no land. This is the only relevant record found in Bedford County. (Bedford County formed 1771; Westmoreland county formed 1773. The above "1783" tax record date should perhaps be 1773?) "The location of his property was on the same Brushy Run where the Colonists had fought during the French & Indian War, and where it is now claimed that the last battle of the American Revolution was fought."

(The author speculates that perhaps the War of 1812 figured in this implied misfortune, but indicates there is no record of Henry Dittman's participation in that war.) In Westmoreland records, the name is found as Henry Detman, Ditman or Dedman. His grandson Adam is seen as Adam Debtman in the probate of his wife's parents' estate.
* Henry married Elisabetha Horn. Births of six children of Henrich Dittman and Elisabetha born between 1792 and 1802 are recorded in Westmoreland Co. PA, Reformed Church records of Rev. John William Weber who served the Brush Creek community and others.
* A land record exists for John Henrich Ditman, Westmoreland Co. 11 Oct. 1813.
* By 1815, Mary & David Detman, minor children of the late Henry Detman, petition the court to appoint them guardians. By Oct. 1818, son John Ditman is administrator of the estate of Henry Ditman, late of North Huntington Twp., Westmoreland Co.
