-Elizabeth "Betty" Hines was born in the 1790's, in Ireland, daughter of Richard Hines and wife Jane.  In about 1800, she was brought by her parents to America in about 1800. She was a young child when the family immigrated with five of their children.  Her older brother and sister remained behind in Ireland for at least a while.  The Hines family settled in northwestern Butler County, PA, living in Muddy Creek, Slippery Rock and Worth townships.  Richard Hines was a farmer, as were the Wimers.  Betty met and married Samuel Wimer, probably in the early 1820's.   Their first child, named Samuel after his father, was killed in childhood when a heavy fence rail fell on him.  Over the next ten years four more children were born, the second one also being named Samuel Wimer, Jr.

The 1870 census marks that her husband Samuel Wimer could not read and write, and does not mark the rest of the family so.  Never-the-less, Betsy's reported age wobbles over the years, so that her calculated birth year could be 1791, 1793, 1794 or 1797.  (Mrs. W. R. Hines puts the date at 1790, but her source is not known to us.)  It is likely that the home did not contain reading material, and that writing and calculating was not necessary to daily life.  In one census Betsy is a couple years older than Samuel; in others, the same age.   She and Samuel lived with their two youngest sons in later years, perhaps on the homestead.  In their late seventies in 1870, they reside with Abner and George. By 1880 Betsy is a widow, residing with Abner and his wife Hannah, and son George is still in the household.   <br>There are a cluster of Wimer farms in the south-central part of Worth Township - William, John, Jonathan. Some authors have believed that Christopher Wimer's land is now under the waters of Lake Arthur.   Samuel Wimer however had his farm in the northern part of the township, just on the south bank of Slippery Rock Creek.
