Fantasy Hurricane League

Pick any 10 towns in the mainland continental United States (costal islands OK). If one of your cities is declared an official disaster area as a result of the hurricane, you get 1 point. You may choose the same town multiple times. Highest total score wins. You get double points if the centerline of the ground track goes through your city. $1 is the entry fee, winner takes all.

Hurricane Ivan contest results:

The storm came ashore near Gulf Shores, Alabama and proceeded north inland. Towns within 40 miles of Gulf Shores include all coastal towns between Pensacola, FL, and Pascagoula, MS. The city of Mobile, AL, is also within 40 miles of the ground track as the storm progressed inland. Towns within this region are worth one point and are colored red below.

Disaster areas were huge and included the following counties:
Louisiana: Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St, Charles, St. Tammany and Terrebonne counties. Mississippi: George, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Perry, Stone and Wayne counties. Alabama: Baldwin, Butler, Clarke, Coffee, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw, Escambia, Geneva, Mobile, Monroe and Washington counties. Florida: Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Liberty, Santa Rosa, Taylor, Wakulla, Walton and Washington.

Hurricane Frances contest results:

The storm broke up some and the exact center was indeterminate when landfall occured. The NOAA indicates that landfall was made somewhere near Stuart, FL. We've assigned ground track points to any city within 40 miles of Stuart. This includes all costal towns between Vero Beach and Lake Worth. These towns are listed in red, below.

The following counties were declared disaster areas by the Department of Homeland Security's office of Emergency Prepardness and Response: Brevard, Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Dixie, Duval, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Indian River, Lake, Lee, Levy, Manatee, Monroe, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Pasco, Polk, St. Johns, Sarasota, Seminole and Volusia.

Strangely, this list excludes St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, and Broward counties where most people chose to select cities. The only town that was chosen that falls in a disaster area is Vero Beach in Indian River County. This town is marked on the lists below with a *. Total score is given next to the participant's name.
